A+ Family Fun!

April 28, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

girl doing homeworkThere’s no denying the benefit of rewarding students for their hard work. In fact, many parents have started giving monetary rewards to kids who earn good grades! Well call us old fashioned, but we prefer rewards that recognize kids’ effort while also encouraging things like spending time with family, engaging with the world, and learning new skills. And what better way to choose D) All of the Above than with a trip to Skate World Leesburg?

Why Skating Is a Great Reward for Good Grades

  1. It’s fun. It wouldn’t be much of a reward otherwise! Roller-skating gets kids’ energy (and endorphins) up. We often see kids laughing and smiling as they try new tricks, jam skate to their favorite songs, and breeze around the rink with parents, siblings, or friends.
  2. It’s good for their brains. Want to sneak in an added benefit? Reward your kids for good grades and invest in their future school success. Studies show that regular physical fitness can improve school performance by reducing stress, improving focus and memory, and even stimulating brain development. Sounds like a great reason to go roller-skating!
  3. It’s doesn’t build bad habits. Handing out money for good grades may seem great on the surface, but childhood experts disagree about its effectiveness. Cash for grades builds expectations, telling children that they deserve compensation for doing schoolwork. By rewarding your child with an experience instead of a cash prize, you can sidestep the problem of compensation for grades (and have a great day with your kid while you’re at it).

Who’s ready for a break from school? Celebrate good grades at Skate World Leesburg.

Is It Better to Rent or Buy Skates?

March 27, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

When most people find a new hobby, they have one question: How can I do this all the time? When your new hobby is skating, the answer is easy: buy a pair of skates. Roller-skating is great for the family, it’s easy to pick up, and it’s just as good for your body as it is for your mood. But how can you decide whether it’s better to rent or buy roller-skates?

When to Rent Roller-Skates

  • Is your child going through a growth spurt? Unless you have a younger child to who can get use out of hand-me-down skates, keep renting for now.
  • If your family darts from one activity to the next (and leaves mountains of sports equipment, camping gear, and school stuff in the trunk), you may want to rent skates. After all, they’ll always be here waiting for you!
  • How often do you roller-skate? If you only make it to the rink once or twice a month, skates might not be a good investment.

Why You Should Buy Skates

  • boy inline skating on rampOwning your own skates means a perfect fit. The boot will mold to your foot, making skating more comfortable and giving you better support.
  • Math matters. Regular skate rentals cost $2, and speed skate and inline skate rentals cost $3. Depending on what kind of skate you buy, a pair of roller-skates can cost anywhere from $40 to a few hundred dollars. If your family skates three times a week, you can pay off basic skates in less than two months!
  • Performance matters. Skate World has high quality rental skates, but if you’re a jam skater, derby skater, or speed skater, you’ll want a special skate. You can buy roller-skates to improve your speed and maneuverability, making you a better skater.

Everything You Need to Know about Skate Maintenance

January 25, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

The New Year is a time to start fresh. So why not start with your roller-skates? Your skates will last for years if you give them a little TLC. Not sure how to maintain your roller-skates? Skate World Leesburg can help.

How to Care for Roller-Skates

  1. roller derby skatesBuff the boot. Want to keep your skates supple and gleaming? Take care of the boot! Dry them out when they get wet from sweat, clean them with mild soap if they get dirty, and apply leather conditioner periodically to keep your skates in top shape.
  2. Tighten the trucks. Roller-skate trucks attach your wheels to your boot. The trucks should fit closely to the boot, so check to make sure they’re still tight.
  3. Wash the wheels. Do your wheels get stuck when you skate? There’s probably a buildup of dirt and debris. Remove them and clean them in soap and water. Make sure they’re fully dry before putting them back on your skate. If your wheels get damaged, replace them ASAP. Wheels are inexpensive, come in fun colors, and can cause a serious injury if you skate on them when they’re broken.
  4. Batten down the bearings. If you only skate indoors, you probably don’t have to worry about skate bearings. Most bearings are maintenance-free. But if you’re an outdoor or aggressive skater, you may need to remove, clean, and lubricate your bearings every so often to guarantee peak performance.

Adults, Stay Active with Roller Skating!

November 25, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

The older we get, the more difficult it becomes to make it to the gym or exercise. But even though it roller skates seems to be harder with each passing day, it becomes that much more important to an adult’s health to stay active. Staying motivated to get up and get active can prove to be challenging, and that’s why it’s important to find something that works with your schedule and is also enjoyable. There are many fun activities out there that are great to keep someone active, but our favorite is, of course, roller skating! Here at Skate World Leesburg in Leesburg, FL, we promote the fun of skating as well as its health benefits. See why you should consider roller skating to help keep you active!

  • Easy to Stick With – It’s important that when you exercise, you find an activity that you can enjoy. Doing an activity you despise to get into shape makes it much easier to slack on.
  • Great Workout in Short Time – Just an 30 minute laid back skate session can burn as much as 250 calories.
  • Easy on the Joints – Roller skating has the same benefits as jogging and it is much easier on the joints. It’s no secret that getting older comes with its aches and pains, so it is important to find a low-impact activity to stay in shape.
  • Affordable – Roller skating won’t break the bank either. A gym membership can sometimes cost an arm and a leg, but visiting the rink will help get you into shape with money to spare.

Skate Through Our Roller Rink Timeline With Us!

October 21, 2016 by Zach Sanders 1 Comment

It is not a thought many of us have, but when our wheels hit that rink floor, more than two centuries of watch history and tinkering occurred to bring us to where we are today. It is difficult to imagine a world without roller skating, but there once was a time when the terms “roller rink” or “roller skating” meant nothing. Now, you may be a little curious as to how all of this got its start, and what influences happened along the way, but two centuries is a lot to sort through. Skate World Leesburg in Leesburg, FL has compiled a timeline of the pivotal moments in roller skating history to make it a little easier on you!

Roller Skating Timeline

  • 1743: This is the first ever recorded account of anyone using anything like roller skates. These first skates were used in a London stage performance, and the inventor is unknown.
  • 1760: The first roller skates are invented! Though the first account was in the stage performance, this is the first ever actual invention of what we know today. These skates were actually inline, believe it or not, and had small metal wheels. The inventor was John Joseph Merlin.
  • 1819: First patented roller skate design, in France by M. Petitbled. These skates are more similar to what we know today. It was very difficult to maneuver in this early design, and was difficult to do much else but move in a straight line.
  • 1857: Roller skating has finally gained enough popularity by this point and has warranted the opening of the first public rinks! They were held at The Strand in London and Floral Hall.
  • 1863: The quad roller skate makes its first appearance. Designed by James Leonard Plimpton in New York City, this model of roller skate made it easier for the skater to turn.
  • 1880: Roller skates are beginning to be mass produced in America, and is experiencing a boom in popularity.
  • 1902: The Chicago Coliseum opens a public skating rink, and more than 7,000 people attend the grand opening.
  • 1916: The first appearance of roller skates on the big screen is in the Charlie Chaplain film, “The Rink.”
  • 1979: Scott Olson and Brennan Olson set out to redesign the skate by using a 1960’s inline skate design and using modern materials and an ice hockey boot. Scott Olson begins promoting the skate, and creates Rollerblade, Inc.
  • Adjustments to the skates are made over the course of the next decades, and with a bit of tweaking and honing, we have arrived at what we have today!

Safety Tips for your Child in the Rink!

September 23, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

The safety of a child is one of the foremost thoughts in a parent’s mind. We want to be there to keep themchild safety gear from all of the most minor scrapes and bruises, but as any parent knows that isn’t always possible. The roller rink is no exception to this, and though we take all the precautions we can to keep everyone safe, tumbles do happen on occasion. Ensuring your child is equipped with the proper safety accessories and measures is key. Skate World Leesburg, located in Leesburg, FL, is here with everything you will need to keep your child safe in the rink.

  • Helmet – Head injuries are all too common within the world of sports and physical activities. If there was one piece of safety equipment to keep in the inventory, this would be the most important. Be sure the helmet fits snugly on the head and covers a good majority of the front and back of the head.
  • Proper Skates – Skates are not a one size and style fits all kind of thing. When purchasing a pair of skates be sure that the skates are comfortable and don’t slip while rolling around. Make sure brakes and wheels are secure before each session.
  • Appropriate Clothing – Clothing can serve a few different purposes when hitting the rink. One purpose can be to avoid unnecessary scrapes and bruise. If this is a major concern, wear long sleeves and pants to mitigate little injuries. Another thing to pay attention to is especially relevant to the pants. If pants are worn while roller skating, be sure they are not too long to avoid getting caught in the wheels.
  • Pads – Another major source of injury while roller skating comes from elbows, knees and wrists. Elbow pads, knee pads and wrist braces are great pieces of equipment to keep in the rink bag.
